Are my expectations too high?
If I wasn’t a doula, I would say no is the answer, but as a doula I may be looking for the perfect doula. Not perfect person, but the do-all doula for me.
After interviewing doulas, I noticed something (was and) is missing from the phone consultation (discovery call). That’s when my mother said, why don’t you ask to meet with them to get food or to take a walk and talk. I said, that’s a good idea and exactly what I need—I need to feel the energy and vibe in-person. I reached out to one of the doulas (that I was considering) for an in-person meeting and was amazed that she didn’t charge me for additional hour of her time. That alone allocated more to the pros of why she could potentially serve as my doula.
Interviewing doulas, gave me the idea to add a discover my doula vibe meeting to my services of meeting mothers/families. And just like the doula who was willing to do it for me, I made the decision that it would not come with a fee.
Did I hire the doula that decided to meet with me again in-person as a complimentary service? Yes.
…to be continued...
Although finding a doula is not easy as a doula, I know that my expectations are not too high because my wants and needs for my birth are important. Just as I would tell any mother, I’m reminding myself that I too deserve to have the doula I desire.
